Chapter Fourteen

I poked the last piece of melon on my plate and reached for my phone as I chewed. The late-morning breakfast crowd in the hotel restaurant was thin, so there weren’t any gawkers Tweeting about the big blueberry muffin I’d eaten. While I brought the phone screen to life, Mom stared at me across the table.

“I hope you’re not reading social media,” she said.

Too late for that.

“I’m texting Braden so we can meet up in a few minutes.”

Mom combed her fingers through her short bob. “I have to give him credit. He’s stuck around a lot longer than I thought he would.”

“Gee, thanks. I didn’t realize I was such terrible friend material.”

“That’s not what I meant. Anyone would be lucky to have you as a friend. I just meant that as a college boy I thought his attention would wander since there’s no chance of you sleeping with him.”

“Oh my God, Mom.” I covered my face. “Not every college guy is a manwhore.”

“It’s very common behavior.”

“How do you know?” I had to laugh. “From watching reruns of Beverly Hills, 90210?”

“You don’t know any more than I do. You’ve never seen what goes on at his apartment.”

A rebuttal edged onto my tongue, and I clamped my lips shut. I had firsthand knowledge of the goings-on at Braden’s apartment, and none of the guys had brought home girls when I was there. The only girl around was pesky Sam.

I typed a message to Braden and received an immediate reply to come up to his room. I wiped my mouth with the linen napkin and pushed back my chair.

“I’ll see you before I get on the bus?” I asked even though I knew Mom would be in her usual spot.

“Of course, sweetheart. Try to get some rest.”

I only got two steps out of the restaurant and into the lobby before a cluster of fans rushed me for pictures. As I smiled for the last one, Quinn and Alex ran over and the fangirls turned their attention to getting photos with Em. Seven years later, her Olympic gold still brought her admiration as well as opportunities and endorsements. With her earnings and her connections, she’d been able to set up a scholarship fund for skaters in financial need, and it had grown bigger every year. Seeing how her life had benefited from the gold medal gave me an idea of what I might experience if I won. Both Em and my agent Kristin had told me there would be no limit to my opportunities.

“Liza, did you see the game?” Alex asked.

“I only saw the first three innings, but I heard we won!”

“Dad’s gonna get us tickets to the World Series!”

“That’s awesome. I went the last time they made it, and it was so much fun.”

My phone dinged with a text.

Braden: You still coming up?

Me: Yep got delayed in the lobby.

“Okay, munchkins, give me hugs for luck.” I spread my arms wide.

They squeezed me until I couldn’t breathe, and I raced to the elevator before anyone else could stop me.
